Algae

What is Algae?

Algae is a diverse group of aquatic organisms that conduct photosynthesis to produce another source of oxygen and detox for its home. Some common algae may include seaweed (such as kelp or phytoplankton). However, there are so many more species of algae that assist the functions of our ecosystems essential to life!

General Care for Phytoplankton within a reef tank

Phytoplankton has amazing benefits to any and all reef tanks! Some benefits of dosing live phytoplankton to your reef tank are that it will consume nitrates and phosphates, resulting in lower nutrients in your reef tank! Additionally, phytoplankton consumes CO2, meaning you will see a higher pH! Many might choose to dose phytoplankton into their tanks which has a general rule of 5ml per 10 gal every 3-4 days. It is typically recommended to dose on a repetitive and consistent schedule. Phytoplankton outnumbers nuisance algae and is a source of food for coral and copepods. Phytoplankton does produce nitrate and phosphates so beware not to overdose. Coral does however benefit from nitrates (in moderation) so its a win win. We also always recommend having Chaeto in your tank that will consume Phosphates and nitrates as well and help balance your reef tank. Lastly, we recommend performing regular water changes around 25-35% on a monthly or bi-monthly basis depending on your nutrient levels. High nutrients is best but never too high! If they are too high, you may run into growth issues and hard corals may start to complain and die off.

General Care for Chaeto within a reef tank

Chaeto is one of the most beneficial algae you can add to your reef tank. It is a nutrient exporter which means it “pulls things out” like Phosphates, nitrates and iron from the water and holds them. With a simple LED grow light, it can grow, thrive, and consume nutrients so your tank stays as healthy as possible. You will find that if it’s doing its job, you will either need to cut back your Chaeto and/or start dosing nitrates and phosphates depending on your feeding and dosing habits. If you are feeding often or dosing phytoplankton, you may find you never need to dose phosphates/nitrates. However, if you only feed a couple times a week you may need to dose phosphates/nitrates to ensure that your Chaeto has enough to eat, as well as your coral.
